It definitely was a bad week to be of the Asian persuasion, at least if you are on television anyway.
I have been anti-The Fashion Show since Rico got cut. I know he was an arrogant SOB but I loved his work. If I was a taller, thinner version of me (like a Stretch Armstrong doll stretched to the max), I would wear everything he designed. He was just an amazing maniacal egotistical talented designer who could put together something without breaking a glisten. He was slammed every week for not knowing his history but come on, his stuff was great. At this week's reunion and annoucement of the winner show, the issue was raised whether the show was RACIST. Everyone gasped and looked stunned that the R card would be played but I do feel that race was an issue. It happened with Project Runway with Michael Knight whose work was criticized as not being "street enough". If you are a person of color, you'd better stick to what mainstream consumer fashionistas believe is your correct culture or that other girl from Destiny's Child will diss you majorly.
But I digress...
Once Rico was cut, I was pulling for James Paul who was the tiny Asian guy with the unidentifiable accent, the nerdy black glasses and the penchant for indigenous cultures and geometric shapes (how much more YELLOW can you get than someone who is short, slight, nearsighted and likes math). I could actually see myself wearing most of his slightly bizarro contemporary museum-esq pieces. They were really cool and a bit, no a lot off center. If you wore them, people would assume you were artsy. Plus, pretty much everything was black. Besides the penchant I have for sparkly white eyeshadow, all of the other body adornment I prefer is black. Yes, I admit it, if I had my way (and didn't have kids who protest too much), I would be one of those goth chicks with the black lipstick, nails, eyeshadow (sparkly though) living a life of complete angst.
James Paul's collection was S and M meets rice paddy. His inspiration was clearly discernable - the indigenous farming people of Asia - but the bondage theme was also visible. I mean, what other designer do you know who would make sure they ordered their B and D gear from peasant women in India? I LOVED LOVED LOVED everything he put out in his show and knew that there was no chance that he would win. There was no way that mainstream America would buy it because it was too ethnic and too edgy.
I also knew that Daniella blew it when she tacked on those plastic shoulder pads on her outfits that looked like leftovers from a Halloween costume or someone's prosthetic leg.
Was anyone surprised that old sourpuss Anna won? I know in a few months, every white woman you know will be wearing a dress with a bottom that looks like a black and white pumpkin. It was a totally safe, uninspiring, boring collection and that sealed the deal.
They should invite all of the gay guys from the Fashion Show (even Isaac) to go on Project Runway. Maybe do an all gay season with Jay and his colorful knitwear, Austin Scarlett, Merlin, Rico and the rest? That would be worth watching.
Maybe they can do a lesbian version with all of the Top Chef contestants?
Besides James Paul, also sailing down the Yellow River of Peril was my friend ARW's new object of affection, Roy Yamaguchi. Roy was on Top Chef Masters and just had a Hiroshima flashback (he BOMBED). Oh, that is a terrible reference but it is true.
I knew Roy was screwed when he discovered there was no shoyu in the pantry for his quickfire dish. That was the moment I knew this was not going to be pretty. You know how us Yellow folk are - totally disoriented when we are in a land without shoyu or white rice. It is like you dropped us in the Mojave Dessert blindfolded.
It was so so so KAWAISO to watch him fumble around in the kitchen but even moreso when the chef's went to Whole Foods to put together a mystery box of ingredients (the challenge was to cook using the items in a mystery box put together by another chef). Here was the kamisama of celebrity chefs aimlessly wandering around in a quest for cheese. Maybe this was a whole karma thing about Asians staying away from dairy products? At that point, I couldn't even watch, it was just too pathetic.
Everyone else made these elaborate, complete meals but all poor Roy could come up with was come charcoal looking kal bi and some mahimahi with lemon grass. It looked like leftovers from one of those cheapy lunch wagons that don't have signs on them and charge you for containers. In other words, it was really really bad. As you can guess, he came in last place.
My friend ARW was so upset. I mean, he had momentarily replaced her last object of yellow fever, General Shintani, and here he had lost.
Well, I'm sure it is of great consolation to know that you have 37 restaurants where people will pay big bucks to eat kal bi and mahimahi. I'm sure none of those other guys cooked dinner for Gene Simmons in their home or plays the drums. How cool is that?
Plus, he's a friend of my totally cool kotonk friend, BS.
Thanks to Jon Gosselin for sealing the total tanking of Asian power by showing up with another media-hungry blonde on his arm.
Where is Ongina when you need her?
Many monku musings about the craziness of life as a Buddhahead Okaasan stuck on a rock in the middle of the sea. 100% guaranteed to offend somebody.

HEEEEELLLLLLPPPPP - One Month Home with the Kids....
OMB (Oh My Buddha) - the reality of August has just set in. The Diva will be home for five weeks and the boys will be home for a month before school starts. I better go and stock up on high blood pressure meds and learn yoga in the next few days.
I did mention having them do community service at work since they will be stuck there anyway but that was met with (as expected) sneers and stink eye. It will be another month of vegging out in front of the TV - at least the location will be changed from home or Grandma's house to my working place. I wonder who will survive the battle for the TV though? My guess is the ji-chans will emerge victorious and it will be golf all day instead of Spongebob.
The kids are considering teaching "the boys" how to play the wii. We took it there once and they seemed to enjoy bowling. Maybe we can get a Brain Age tourney going.

Let's All False Crack Jon
I was trying to give Jon Gosselin the benefit of the doubt even though I know it was only because of the whole "he's hapa" thing. I've always been Team Kate mostly because I am the yellow version of her (minus 5 kids). I've done the screaming thing at Toys R 'Us when Oscar the Grouch was engrossed in watching the game on his teeny tiny portable television instead of focusing on the Mad Cow who was pretending a stack of diapers was Mount Everest. I'm neurotic about the way the clothing is folded and will refold everything if the towels are folded into four and not three or the t-shirts are folded in half and not thirds. I know this comes as a shock to those of you who have come to my house and know it looks like the Manson Family committed a grisly murder there, but yes, I do on occasion take my housewife duties to heart.
I didn't even see anything wrong with her whacking him when he was being a space cadet or snarky. Any REAL wife just nodded in agreement when Kate whacked him on the back as he headed out the door without remembering to take any of the kids' stuff. It's all of you fake mothers who called it abusive or evidence of emotional instability. The guy was being a DOOFUS and if I was there, I would have whacked him with the spatula or something.
When they split, Kate was crucified as the worst mom since Joan Crawford. Look at her fake boobs (look at Jon's fake hair), look at her trying to act young in her new clothes (look at Jon trying to act young on his new motorcycle), look at her Flock of Seagulls hairdo...okay, I can't defend that.
This weekend, however, my guess is the majority of the world is now on my side as Team Jon fumbled majorly by taking a vacation at St. Tropez with his 22 year old bimbette to Christian Audiger's yacht. Yes, I can hear you saying how I am pretty much dressed in Ed Hardy attire if I'm not in an inappropriate Happy Bunny t-shirt but this is different. I did not pimp out my kids and offer them up as models for my new line of kids clothes with a "Hollywood Motorcycle" theme.
No surprise then after themedia crucified Jon that he returned home and was photographed with Kate and the kids. Note the utter lack of any semblance of a smile on the faces of anyone.
Go Team Kate Go. Next step is taking off that wedding ring though. Sell it on E-bay and hire yourself a gigolo who looks like Zac Efron. Leave the kids with Jon's new hoochie and see how she enjoys playing big bad step-mama without the assistance of pakalolo. Even us veteran old lady moms know we could not handle an hour let alone a week with eight kids - or a week alone with Maddie. Also, does that girl look like she could eat kim chee? Not even with a case of the munchies.
Kate - as you walk into the sunset with faux Zac, sing in your best white girl voice "To the left, to the left, all of your Ed Hardy shirts and stupid knit caps in the box to the left..."

Stick to the Dead Cow at Buffalo Boy's Hoagies
We went to Buffalo Boy's Hoagies today for lunch. It is the new sandwich place on Waialae (near Kokua Foods with the MJ mural). I've wanted to go since I worked at my old job but never had the chance. Mad Cow and the Diva were sick ofho me feeding them at 7-11 or the school snack bar (they got a reprieve yesterday when we had to go to Jack in the Box to get UH Jack antenna balls for Aunty LN) so we thought we'd try something new.
Parking is on the side in case you are wondering.
If you have a fetish for polynesian guys with lots of tattoos who look like their day job is "lifting" in preparation for the night job as MMA fighters, this is the perfect place for you. There were two skinny haole guys who were scrunched into a table at the front of the place, right in the window - just in case some race riot broke out. The strange thing is that the other customers besides the brown burly boys were middle-aged Japanese ladies - yes, including yours truly. It was like a Facebook meetup gone really wrong.
The twins had 12 inch steak hoagies and the Mad Cow had a chicken finger sandwich. The Diva ate the entire hoagie and the Professor ate only half. Amazingly, nobody had special sauce drippings on their clothing as they usually do. The Mad Cow ate the chicken out of the sandwich and left everything else, prompting his daily lecture from the veterans about why he should eat his vegetables.
They also ate two large orders of fries and an order of onion rings. They said these were the best fries and onion rings they have ever eaten. I was amazed that they even agreed to share some with some of the veterans' wives who were around at lunch time.
I had a vegetable hoagie which was the steak hoagie without meat. Next time, I will just order the steak hoagie and take the meat out since it actually ended up costing about $3 more for the veggie sandwich. They charge you the same price as the regular steak hoagie then an extra $3 for the additional veggies (mushroom, onion, green peppers which I nixed, tomato, lettuce). So the $9 loaded with steak sandwhich was a $12 vegetable sandwich. Next time, forget eating for good karma. I'll either put up with the dead cow or just buy two orders of onion rings. Yes, my fellow veggies, definitely SKIP this sandwich but go for the sides.
I would attach photos but all that is left is the Mad Cow's bread and veggies.
The cost for our lunch was (gasp and hope that Oscar isn't reading this) $57 for 2 steak hoagies, 1 chicken finger sandwhich combo, two orders of fries, one order of onion rings and three bottled drinks. Hmm, could have lunched at the Pineapple Room for that or bought lots of UH antenna balls at Jack's Place....

Is Paris the Greatest Actress in the World?
No, this posting has nothing to do with Paris Hilton with whom the word "actress" should never be associated with. I hate to admit though I did enjoy watching her try to keep up with Kathy Griffin on My Life on the D List. It was hilarious because I don't think Paris quite understood the difference between sarcasm and brainless adoration. I did lose all respect for Snoop Dogg after learning that not only does Paris Hilton have his home number on her cell phone but he seemed to actually delight when she attempted to be a OG and speak with a "snoop d o doggie jizzle my mizzle" accent. It was horrifying. In the future, you will be able to point to that moment as the day hip hop died tragically.
The Paris that is burning is Paris Jackson, MJJ's only daughter. The one who was visible in public for the first time without the burka or the Mardi Gras feathered mask. If you have been living in a cave on the Neverland Ranch, you are the only one who didn't see her tearful goodbye to "the best Daddy in the world". If you didn't shed a tear after listening to Brooke Shield's remembrances, I bet you were blubbering away listening and watching Paris Jackson. It was such a display of raw emotion. Of course, it would have been better if you didn't have the rest of the Jackson clan around prompting her to speak clearly and adjusting the microphone. Hey, did you notice that poor Prince (the blonde boy) got kind of elbowed to the side by Janet at the end of Paris' speech? Maybe she wanted to avoid having another Aryan youth rip off her blouse to expose her "bubbies" as they say on the Real Housewives of New Jersey?
A caller to a local radio station the day after the funeral went on a rant about how awful the Jackson family was to stage the whole Paris thing - that is clearly was fake and the girl was a good actress. The caller said that whenever a parent died in her family, the children were totally distraught and in tears. Because Paris was not crying on the stage, she must have faked the whole thing said the caller. As you can guess, she was slammed by the DJ's and other listeners for her criticism. The consensus was it was a little girl speaking from the heart who had no more tears left to shed.
I have been to funerals where a young child was left behind due to the death of a parent. The funny thing is, I have never been to one where the child was crying during the funeral. They just sat there totally numb or acted like it was just another day. I didn't take this as "they don't care about Mom or Dad". It was clear they were basically walking wounded who mentally had not come to grips with the reality of the situation. Think about it. Even as an adult, the thought of losing our parents is unimaginable. When it happens, our mind tends to shut down to dull the pain of loss. There are so many things to do to say goodbye that we do not have the luxury to take time to mourn. We look beyond the death and focus on the planning of the big event, the funeral.
It is only when the craziness of the funeral is over and there is only silence remaining that the brain goes, "Okay, now DEAL with this...." You realize you will never see that person again, you regret all that you didn't say or that you didn't return that phone call because you were busy, you wish you could tell them how empty you are. Whether you are a Senior or a child, that is the time that the emotions let loose and the tears can come.
So all of you Paris Jackson haters out there, focus your evil on someone who deserves it - like Paris Hilton.
I didn't get to watch the funeral as I was at work and couldn't find a live feed on my I-Phone. I did see some of the "highlights" though. Here's some of my impressions:
Wasn't Mariah Carey awful? I know she was sad and all but gee, it was like an American Idol audition - the ones that highlight the rejects. And she looked really strange too - too much botox or something. I wonder if having that young husband Nick Cannon has made her want a snip, snip here and a tuck, tuck there. At least Nick went on television and defended her terrible performance, kind of. He didn't say it was good, he said that "she did the best she could as she was distraught". In otherwords, she sucked for a good reason. They should have let the guy sing the whole song. And what was she wearing? It reminded me of those Jerry Springer shows where the Grandma tells the hoochie Granddaughter that it was improper to wear coochie cutter shorts and a tube top to Church.
What was Lionel Richie so mad about at the end of the funeral? He was just scowling and looking generally P.O.'d about something. Did Nicole Ritchie tell him he would be having yet another grandbaby?
I really hate to admit this but I thought Al Sharpton was fantastic. It was the first time that I have ever listened to him without shaking my head or turning the channel. MJJ wasn't strange, his life was strange. Uh, wait, I guess he was a little strange but who wouldn't be with what he had gone through. And how did Reverend Al lose all that weight? He should do Jenny Craig commercials with Valerie Bertinelli. Maybe you look fatter when you are in athletic attire from Adidas instead of a regular suit.
I am mad that Michael never went to see Bubbles once that chimp was sent to a monkey old folks home. Wasn't that his dearest friend for years? I wonder if he ever went to visit his llamas?
I loved the performances by Usher and Jennifer Holiday. They were both incredible. Usher showed that if you have real talent, you can still SING even though you are grief-stricken. Very classy that he went to see Mrs.Jackson at the end of his performance. Jennifer Holiday was just jaw-droppingly good. I will forgive her for being preggers by Punk from I Love New York.
I am still kind of walking around in a haze though about this whole Michael passing away thing. There is a beautiful mural on the wall at Kokua Foods in Moiliili that I saw today. It depicts Michael in his Smooth Criminal best. It made my heart feel a little better. I wanted to take a photo but the kids said that would be "too retarded".
I heard that ABC News ran an article on their website asking whether the black Jackson family were qualified to raise the clearly totally white Jackson kids. Isn't this crazy? Nobody would ask the opposite question if it was a white family raising their black grandchildren. There are so many white parents walking around with their adopted kids from China and nobody even questions when they change Ping's name to Penelope and switch her from rice to radicchio. It's all good since they "rescued" the kid from her impoverished life in Asia. It's the whole plantation mentality rearing it's ugly head again. So stupid.
Last thought - what do you think life will be like if your name is Blanket? I guess I am not one to talk since my son's name is Beanie.

Evil Is as Evil Does
Why are there so many evil people in the world? Why did most of them have some kind of tie to Michael Jackson?
I am still in the midst of MJJ mourning. Had a big sob session last night when they did a montage of videos on CNN to "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough". The clips all focused on Michael the entertainer, when he still looked like a human being who had lots of plastic surgery and not a freak (kind of like how the Real Housewives of New Jersey look compared to that strange rich Cat Lady in New York). It was a honestly felt tribute, you just knew it was done by someone who was a fan.
It is so tragic that even in death, Michael cannot escape the evil that is Joe Jackson. I was watching the red carpet for the BET Awards and here was Papa Joe hyping his new record label. His response to every question about Michael's death was to talk about his new record label and the artists he had signed. Not a single tear was shed. I mean, you think he would at least be able to muster up a tear thinking of the lost income resulting from Michael's death but nada. Maybe he figured that he can release a bunch of post-mortem CDS like the estates of Elvis and Tupac did. Don't you dread knowing that the Neverland Ranch will turn into Graceland West? I can just see it now (uh, but I will still make a pilgrimage there if and when it opens).
It was also gross to see Lou Ferrigno on television. Apparently, the Hulk was Michael's personal trainer for a while. He initially seemed very concerned but at the end of the interview, Lou had to mention how he would like to honor Michael by appearing on the TV show, Dancing with the Stars. Oh yes, I am sure that Michael Jackson hoped and prayed that people would honor him by signing up for a cheezy reality show and doing the rhumba in his memory.
I used to believe that all people are inherently good but the older I get, the more cynical I get. I now think the opposite - that all people are inherently evil and must battle with those demons to walk the right path of life. I also think most people are inherently lazy but that's another rant. The majority of people I know have triumphed over this and are good, solid people (who can be evil when it's fun to be evil). Unfortunately, I have come face to face with truly dark Harry Potter dementor-ish monsters.
The one true thing about this is that from the moment you are in the presence of evil, your inner Oprah tells you "GET THE F**K AWAY!!!" You should listen to this but most of us are in situations where we cannot. Maybe the person works with us, is a new acquaintance or a friend of a friend, or worst of all, is a relative. We try to rationalize why we should like or at least tolerate them so we won't be "bad" ourselves but what we really should be doing is dragging them to a large cave and closing it with a 10 ton boulder so they can never see the light of day again.
Looking back, I have felt that something was not quite right with every evildoer that I have crossed paths with from the moment I met them. Yet being the mindless dutiful Japanese daughter that I am, I pushed it aside. I mean, nice people give others the benefit of the doubt, right? Don't just a book by its cover, right? But when the title of the book is "I am Jeffrey Dahmer incarnate", maybe you should put it down and run.
These people can look you in the face and lie through their teeth. Even when you call them on it, they never fess up but just dig up another lie from their bag of darkness. They seem to get away with everything, even the most aggregious wrongdoing. They are slippery like snakes and have no sense of righteousness at all. It's kind of ironic that those Evil Beings that I have personally dealt with are always the ones who claim they are church-going, God-fearing people. It is like they feel that it is their divine right to rip people off, that they deserve every bit of their ill-gotten emotional or financial gain.
What is really scary is how these evil people take advantage of those who are most defenseless. They are like those cheetahs to stalk a herd of antelopes - why expend energy and effort to take down a healthy strong young antelope when you can whack a weak elder or chow down on a helpless baby?
It is those who need protection who are often victimized. We all have stories about a senior citizen who was left financially destitute by a person he or she considered "like a child". After all, didn't the Evil One express its love and devotion on a daily basis? Little did this innocent elder realize that with each warn embrace, the Evil One was reaching deep into his wallet or her purse for wads of cash. What hurts more than the economic downfall is the sense of betrayal and the loss of "face" - the realization that someone they trusted and loved (who they thought loved them back) was just in it for the benjis.
We all know someone who was wooed by Mr. or Ms. Totally Wrong when they were totally emotionally vulnerable. I'm sure everyone has a male friend who was cleaned out by a "bar girl with a heart of gold" after a nasty divorce. As soon as you hear those words, "Oh, I met her at Club [fill in the $20 glass of water bar on Keeaumoku of your choice]" you knew that it was going to end badly. Someone was going to walk away with a financial windfall and it wasn't the person with testosterone. No matter how often you told him that you saw the girl at Louis Vuitton with another middle-aged sucker with a black American Express, he would not believe you. But we all know how this ends - when the cash it tapped out, that compassionate and kind woman makes a hasty exit in the new Mercedes convertible that dummy frend of yours is still making monthly payments on.
Once I went to temple and the Priest was talking to me about a guy who came in to see him. The guy was insanely in love with a bar girl and as the story always goes, was turning over his entire paycheck to her yet she wouldn't make a commitment to him. He bought her designer bags, diamonds, paid her rent but she wouldn't accept his proposal of marriage. My Priest told him that it was clear the bar girl was just a glorified hooker - exchanging S*x for money. Then the guy explained that they hadn't even done anything yet. To this, my Priest said, "Boy, you are REALLY STUPID! You are giving her money and not even getting anything? At least you should get something."
On the flip side, we all have a female friend who was emotionally ripped off by a player or a "unhappily" married guy claiming he is separated. As soon as you hear those words, "Oh, I met him on the internet", you knew that this sutuation was also going to end badly. Anytime intimacy between two people involves a keyboard and a web cam, you are asking for trouble. Who doesn't have a vulnerable friend who packed everything up to move in with Mr. Wonderful only to discover that Mr. Evil One was still married, not working, on drugs or alcohol, actually gay, or any other bizarro characteristic featured in a Jerry Springer episode. What is truly sad about this is that for some reason, the sweeter the woman, the evil-er the dude.
So, how do you tell who is truly evil? Someone told me once that it is all in the smile. Most people look their best when they are smiling but evil people do not. They cannot smile and look natural or happy. Something is always a little off. They look fake or they look like they are scowling. When I first heard this, I thought it was nonsense but now I believe it it true. Try it yourself. Look at photos of the people who have screwed you over. I bet you will see that their "smiling faces" are not beautiful.
I know I am not supposed to send bad vibes into the universe but I do believe that karma is a b***h. I cannot help but hope that there is some divine payback that will befall these evil-doers, especially those who seem to get away with everything.
Bachi rules the world, baby.
